Ads on BajanThings
BajanThings.com is a hobby site started in December 2014 by cousins William Burton and Peter Burton who have owned the domain since 2005.
We added display ads to the site in March 2015 to help contribute to the annual costs of maintaining the BajanThings.com website.
The display ads that appear on BajanThings.com are provided by our Ad Partner/s, who aim to place relevant and targeted ads known as personalised ads. If our Ad Partners have no ads to serve we either serve no ad or we may serve a default BajanThings ad.
BajanThings Ad Partners is:
Google AdSense in delivering personalised ads serves a pop-up (consent banner) which is mandatory and required by law to comply with data privacy regulations, specifically in the European Union – the EU User Consent Policy; in the UK – the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); and in the USA – the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA).
The Google pop-up (consent banner) on BajanThings looks like this:

This pop-up (consent banner) on BajanThings is served by Google to:
- Informs the user that their data is being used for personalised ads.
- Requests consent for data collection.
- Provides an option for users to accept or refuse personalised ads.
Visitors to BajanThings can Consent to personalised ads or by clicking on Manage Options can choose what if any data they are prepared to share with Google and its ad-partners.

The Google pop-up (consent banner) on BajanThings is generally only shown the first time you visit BajanThings.
To force the Google pop-up (consent banner) on BajanThings to re-appear, so you can change the data you choose to share with Google you need to:
- Clear you browser cache.
- Then close your browser.
- Then re-open your browser and navigate to BajanThings.com.
The BajanThings Google pop-up (consent banner) should now re-appear. Click on Manage options to make any changes. Once finished Confirm choices to save them.
Ads within the copy of BajanThings are manually placed using the WordPress plugin: AdInserter, which allows us to add a label above each ad to clearly indicate its placement. The wording of the label is dictated by our Ad Partner and is: Advertisements.
Vignette ads which are auto delivered page transition ads do not include the label Advertisements.
Below is an example of a typical in-content advertisement, labelled with the word “Advertisements” above it to clearly indicate that it is an ad:

Our Ad Partners personalise the ads that you see based on your internet surfing activity outside of BajanThings.com. This is out of the control of BajanThings.com.

Ad revenue plus Donations contribute to off-setting some of the running costs of BajanThings.
Contrary to popular belief for a website our size, advertising revenue does not cover the cost of domain registration, hosting, WordPress theme, cache management, dynamic image delivery or specialist plugins needed to maintain BajanThings.com.
If you enjoy the BajanThings posts please consider making a small donation which will go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the BajanThings website and support our mission to document Barbados’ recent history.
