From 1841 to 1997 Hong Kong was a British Colony. At midnight on 1st July 1997 Hong Kong was returned to the People’s Republic of China and renamed Hong Kong SAR (Special Administrative Region).

Under the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, Hong Kong is part of China but retains its own systems and way of life for 50 years. The “One Country, Two Systems” principle is set to expire in 2047, however, with the passage of time and the passage of the National Security Law by Hong Kong SAR on 30th June 2020, the USA and UK have condemned the Chinese government of seriously breaching the principle.
